Open Water certification, fun dives, Advanced, equipment rental, Divemaster — here's what you'll actually pay for diving in Koh Tao in 2026, and how it compares to the rest of the world.

Koh Tao has one of the most affordable dive certification scenes in the world — and that's not marketing language, it's a verifiable fact. An Open Water certification that costs €600–900 in Europe, AU$650–900 in Australia, or US$400–600 in the Caribbean will cost you 9,900 THB (roughly $280 USD at current rates) at Carabao Diving. The equipment is included. The instructor speaks English. The water is 30°C and the visibility is 15–20m. There's a reason Koh Tao certifies an estimated 20,000+ divers per year.

This guide gives you the full 2026 picture — every dive type, every course level, equipment rental, accommodation packages, and how to budget for a full week of diving in Koh Tao without any surprises.

All course prices at Carabao Diving include: all required diving equipment (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, fins, tank), SSI digital training materials, boat trips to open water dive sites, and your SSI certification registration fee. There are no hidden fees, no surprise "certification processing" charges added at the end.

What's Included in Dive Course Fees?

  • All dive equipment: BCD, regulator, wetsuit (3mm), mask, fins, and dive computer or tables
  • All boat trips and fuel — we operate our own longtail directly from the beach
  • SSI digital learning materials via the SSI App (no textbooks to buy)
  • SSI certification registration — your card is digital and available immediately in the SSI App
  • Dive insurance coverage for the duration of your course
  • Instructor time and one-to-one or small group teaching (maximum 4 students per instructor at Carabao)

Equipment Rental: What If You Need to Rent Separately?

For certified divers doing fun dives, equipment is typically included in the fun dive price (as at Carabao). If you ever need to rent equipment separately — for example, if you bring your own regulator and just need a tank and BCD — typical rental rates in Koh Tao are as follows:

EquipmentTypical Rental Cost (per dive)
Full equipment set (BCD, reg, wetsuit, mask, fins)300–500 THB
BCD only100–150 THB
Regulator only100–150 THB
Wetsuit (3mm)50–100 THB
Mask + fins50–100 THB
Dive computer100–200 THB
Underwater torch (for night dives)100–150 THB

Koh Tao vs the World: Diving Cost Comparison

How does Koh Tao stack up against other major dive destinations? The comparison is striking:

DestinationOpen Water Course (approx.)Single Fun Dive (approx.)
Koh Tao, Thailand$275 USD$28 USD
Bali, Indonesia$350–400 USD$35–50 USD
Great Barrier Reef, Australia$600–800 USD$80–120 USD
Caribbean (various)$450–600 USD$60–100 USD
Mediterranean (Spain/Greece)$550–750 EUR$60–90 EUR
Red Sea (Egypt)$350–450 USD$40–60 USD

The quality of instruction and marine life in Koh Tao is comparable to destinations that cost two to three times as much. The combination of low cost, excellent conditions, and extremely high instructor density (there are more experienced diving instructors per square kilometre in Koh Tao than almost anywhere else in the world) makes it the most efficient place on earth to learn to dive.

Hidden Costs to Budget For

The course fee covers diving. Here's what else to budget for during your time on the island:

  • Accommodation: Budget guesthouses from 400–700 THB/night. Mid-range 800–1,500 THB/night. Carabao offers OW + 3-night accommodation packages from 9,900 THB (dorm) to 10,900 THB (private room)
  • Meals: Excellent Thai food is available island-wide for 80–150 THB per dish. Budget 300–600 THB/day for food if eating locally
  • Ferry from the mainland: Chumphon (nearest train station) to Koh Tao by night ferry is approximately 200–300 THB. Surat Thani combined bus+ferry packages run 400–600 THB
  • Taxi to pier: If you're not staying on Sairee, taxis to the pier cost 100–200 THB each way. Staying at Carabao or nearby eliminates this completely
  • Reef-safe sunscreen: Essential and available on the island for 150–300 THB (bring your own from home for better selection)
  • Travel insurance: Highly recommended; a standard backpacker policy covering diving typically costs $2–5/day

Best Value Combinations at Carabao

Open Water + 3 Nights Accommodation

Our most popular package for first-time visitors: SSI Open Water course combined with 3 nights at the Carabao beachfront resort. You're 30 seconds from the water for the entire course. Priced from 9,900 THB (dorm bed) — this is genuinely one of the best-value learn-to-dive packages in Southeast Asia.

Open Water + Advanced Adventurer in One Week

If you have a week in Koh Tao, this is how to spend it. Day 1–4: Open Water certification. Day 5–6: Advanced Adventurer — 5 adventure dives including a deep dive to 30m, night dive, and underwater navigation. By the end of the week, you leave with an Advanced certification, 9 logged dives, and the ability to dive virtually any recreational site in the world. Combined price around 18,000 THB — exceptional value for a week-long professional diving education.

Book Early vs Walk-In: The Honest Answer

The price is the same whether you book ahead or walk in. But during peak season (December–March, July–August), our courses fill weeks in advance. Showing up and hoping for a spot the next morning is a real risk in high season. We recommend booking at least a week ahead during busy periods — two to four weeks if you have inflexible travel dates.
